Why This Ride Matters

Every mile Mike rides is a step toward giving a veteran the support they deserve. This 1,000-mile journey isn’t just about endurance—it’s about transforming lives through the power of service dogs.

Mike isn’t the kind of guy to leave things unfinished.

In 2024, he took on a coast-to-coast ride, pedaling thousands of miles across the U.S. to raise awareness and funds to place service dogs with those who need them most. That journey helped provide a life-changing service dog for veteran Ed McCaffrey, but one of Mike’s goals was left just shy of complete—funding a dog for an additional U.S. veteran.

So, in true Mike fashion, he geared up for another ride.

In March 2025, Mike set out to finish what he started with a 1,026-mile, fully unsupported cycling journey from Key West, Florida to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. Over the course of 13 days, Mike rode through heat, headwinds, backroads, and moments of deep reflection—honoring U.S. service members and the mentors who shaped his life.

He sang across bridges, muscled through tough terrain, and reminded us all that purpose can carry you farther than pain ever could.

Mike chose to ride for Retrieving Independence—and we are honored to be part of his story.

The ride is over, but the ripple effect is just beginning.

Mike’s 2025 ride wasn’t just about the miles—it was about finishing what he started and turning determination into lasting impact.

Thanks to his dedication—and your incredible support—Mike’s Miles raised over $14,000 this year.

The first portion of those funds helped us complete our 2024 goal, fully covering the cost of a service dog for a veteran who had been waiting.
Now, the remaining funds are being applied to our 2025 goal of $15,000—and we’re already more than 90% of the way there!

Every mile Mike rode, every name he honored, and every donation made has brought us closer to giving another U.S. veteran the gift of independence through a trained service dog.

Let’s finish this year strong—just like Mike did.

Mike may have completed his 1,026-mile ride—but the mission isn’t finished just yet.

We’re still working to raise the final funds needed to fully sponsor a service dog for a veteran in 2025. With over $12,000 already raised from Mike’s ride, we’re just $3,000 away from reaching the goal.

Here’s how you can help keep the momentum going:

  • 💸 Donate to help us close the gap and change a veteran’s life

  • 📣 Share Mike’s story to spread awareness and inspire others

  • 🐾 Follow Retrieving Independence to stay updated on the dog your support helps place

    • @retrievindindependence

Every dollar gets us one step closer.

Let’s finish what Mike started—together.

Where Has Mike Been?

A look back at the milestones Mike has reached along the way!

Day 13 | March 19 | Hilton Head Island, SC | 1,026 Miles—Final Ride!

“Day 13 and done.”

Mike’s journey ended today on Hilton Head Island—1,026 miles of heart, grit, and purpose. But the finish line wasn’t about the miles. It was about the mission: honoring our U.S. service members, one pedal at a time.

He shared a final tribute to his cousin Bobby Bennett (U.S. Army)—“Gotcha, man!”—and offered a solemn remembrance of Darrick Wright and his family, and all Gold Star families who have paid the ultimate price.

Mike also honored his own family’s legacy of service:

  • Norval Bennett – U.S. Army, WWII

  • Henry Lantry – U.S. Army, Bronze Star & Purple Heart

  • James “Zig Zag” Kelley – U.S. Army

  • James Cameron – Naval Reserves

  • Don Hurley – U.S. Army Air Corps

  • Gerald Hurley – U.S. Army, WWII

  • Ted Hurley – U.S. Army

  • Dick Hurley – U.S. Army

  • Bob Hurley – U.S. Army

  • Joe McKennit – U.S. Army

“You may not know these names—but they all served on your behalf. Please take a minute to thank those who have served. I know I am.”

The ride may be over, but the impact isn’t.

Day 12 | March 18 | Hardeeville, SC | 96 Miles for Fathers & Sons

Mike rode nearly 100 miles today—pushing hard inland from the South Carolina coast and honoring the legacy of fathers and sons along the way.

This day’s tribute goes to John Briggs Sr. and John Briggs Jr., a father-son duo whose commitment to service, family, and the great outdoors runs deep. From Vietnam to military helicopter missions, and from the St. Lawrence River to every life they’ve touched—these are the kinds of men you’re proud to know.

And let’s not forget Mrs. Celia Briggs—the matriarch, the heart, the force behind them both.

Final destination ahead. Let’s ride. 💙🐾

Day 11 | March 17 | Jacksonboro, SC | 80+ Miles of Tough Sledding

Today was a grind. Over 80 miles of rough shoulder, thick cinders, and relentless rumble strips—Mike describes it as “tough sledding,” plain and simple.

But the struggle was a powerful reminder of the challenges our service members face every day. Inspired by the Navy SEAL Museum’s iconic phrase, “The easiest day was yesterday,” Mike dedicated today’s ride to a Navy hero: the son of John and Patty Raby.

Currently serving as a Chief Intelligence Specialist in D.C., Raby has spent 13+ years in service, with deployments across Bahrain, Japan, England, California, and more. He leads intel briefings for senior officers, mentors younger service members, and is even earning his master’s in International Relations—while his wife also serves in the Navy Reserve.

To the Rabys: may your sleds be waxed and your powder deep. And young Raby? Mike says—call your mother. 💙🇺🇸

Day 10 | March 16 | Savannah, GA | 750 Miles Down

Today’s an “off-cycle” update as Mike takes a well-earned rest day in Savannah—750 miles in and 250 to go!

He’s using this moment to say thank you to all the Kings, Queens, Princes, and Princesses who’ve cheered him on, offered encouragement, and supported the mission. Your words and generosity mean the world.

The ride may be nearing its final stretch, but the impact we’re creating together? That’s just getting started. 🐾💙

Let’s keep pushing toward the finish line—help us fund a life-changing service dog for a veteran!

Day 9 | March 15 | Savannah, GA | 62 Miles in Honor

Mike rode 62 miles into Savannah today, and this leg of the journey carried a deeper purpose.

At the request of a friend—and with great respect—today’s ride was dedicated to Geoff “Little” “Gooo” Golden, a veteran whose life of service deserves to be honored.

Geoff, the son of the late Gary and Pat Golden, served in the U.S. Army from 1986–1995. A Clarkson College graduate and ROTC member, Geoff earned numerous awards and graduated from multiple military schools, completing nearly four years of active duty before retiring.

So today, we raise our hands and offer sincere thanks for Geoff’s dedication, courage, and sacrifice.

Want to honor more veterans like Geoff? Every mile of this ride helps fund a service dog for a veteran in need. 💙🐾🇺🇸

Day 8 | March 14 | Darien, GA | 75 Miles of Gratitude

Today’s 75-mile ride brought Mike across state lines into Georgia—and deep into reflection.

As the road stretched ahead, his mind turned to the coaches and mentors who helped shape his life. From youth sports to college hockey (and everything in between), Mike shared a heartfelt shoutout to the people who made a lasting impression—many of whom he still remembers by name and nickname.

Their influence stuck. And today’s message is simple: if you get the chance to make an impact on someone’s life… GO BIG. You never know how long that impression will last.

Day 7 | March 13 | Yulee, FL | 98 Miles In The Books!

Day 7: Farewell, Florida! 98 More Miles 🚴‍♂️🌅

After seven days and 613 miles, Florida is officially in the rearview! Mike wrapped up the day in Yulee, FL, just shy of the Georgia border, with 98 more miles under his belt.

The ride took him through winding coastal roads, long stretches of quiet countryside, and a final farewell to the Sunshine State. With Georgia ahead tomorrow, the home stretch is getting closer—but there’s still plenty of road left to ride.

Want to help push Mike forward? Every donation gets us closer to funding a service dog for a veteran! 🚴‍♂️🐕💙

Day 6 | March 11 | St. Augustine, FL | First 100 Mile Stretch!

Day 6: 100 Miles Against the Wind 💨🚴‍♂️

Today’s ride? 100 miles. 10 hours. All against the wind. But Mike had a secret weapon—friendship.

From surprise encouragement from Mrs. Patsy Morley, Pat & Lori Hackett, to a lunch break with Mike Leonard, Andy, and Joan McGuinness, the support was nonstop.

Mike’s biggest takeaway? The power of friendships. Whether it’s a quick text, a call, or tracking someone down mid-bike ride (Pat and Lori really did that!), small gestures can turn a tough day around.

Keep the support coming! Every donation brings us closer to funding a service dog for a veteran. 🚴‍♂️🐶💙

Day 5 | March 10 | Titusville, FL | 80+ Miles!

Day 5: Another 80+ Miles in the Books 🚴‍♂️🔥

Mike powered through 80+ miles today, wrapping up another long stretch on the road. The ride was full of surprises—including a special visit from Andy “Gibb” McGuinness, who drove down to meet the team for dinner in Titusville.

They refueled the best way possible: a big meal, great company, and even a little hardware store trivia (which also happened to serve “barley sandwiches” 🍻).

Tomorrow, it’s a big one—100 miles up the Space Coast to St. Augustine. Stay tuned for more miles, more stories, and more ways to support Mike’s ride!

Day 4 | March 9 | Vero Beach, FL | Another 80 Miles!

Day 4: Heat, Honor & A Lesson in Resilience 🚴‍♂️🔥

Another 80+ miles down, bringing Mike’s total to 335 miles! The biggest challenge today? The heat—85+ degrees made for a grueling ride.

Before wrapping up the day, the team made a surprise stop at the National Navy SEAL Museum, where a sign at the obstacle course entrance read:

“The easiest day was yesterday.”

A fitting reminder as the ride pushes on.

Inside, Mike’s teammate Jay shared a powerful story—his son, Jack Kuenzle, was 1 of only 11 out of 250 candidates to complete SEAL training. Jack went on to serve five years on SEAL Team Eight before tackling new challenges as an ultra-marathoner and skimo racer—even setting a record for ascending and descending Mt. Hood… in his underwear.

Another takeaway from today? Service dogs trained alongside Navy SEALs, proving that like Jack, Retrieving Independence dogs are trained for resilience, adaptability, and success in multiple roles.

Tomorrow, the miles continue! Want to support Mike’s ride? Donations go toward providing a service dog for a veteran in need. 🚴‍♂️🔥

Day 3 | March 8 | West Palm Beach, FL | 83 More Miles Down!

Day 3: Miami Send-Off & Inspiring Encounters 🚴‍♂️🔥

Mike clocked 83 miles today, bringing his total to 255 miles! The day started strong with a Marine training escort out of Miami Beach, riding past runners, cyclists, beach volleyball games, and outdoor gyms.

One of the day’s highlights? Meeting a 93-year-old bike shop owner who reminded them that experience (and mileage) comes in all forms. Through it all, he’s fueled by the encouragement of everyone supporting this ride:

“Y’all are doing the real work—I’m just sweating and being the recipient of old man jokes (deservedly so).”

Tomorrow, the ride continues! Want to support Mike’s journey? Every donation helps provide a service dog for a veteran. 🚴‍♂️🔥

Day 2 | March 7 | Miami Beach, FL | Another 84 Miles In The Books!

Day 2: Headwinds, Highways & Miami Nights 🚴‍♂️

Mike pushed through 84 miles today, bringing his total to 172 miles! Strong headwinds out of the Keys made for a tough morning, but he and his fellow cyclists knocked out 47 miles by noon.

The afternoon brought slowdowns—construction and Miami traffic tested his patience, but he made it to Miami Beach just in time to recover poolside with seafood and live music.

“Sitting by a pool eating calamari, bang bang shrimp, and octopus while listening to a band play Earth, Wind & Fire has a way of soothing a sore saddle!”

Tomorrow, he rides on! Support Mike’s journey by donating to help fund a service dog for a veteran. 🚴‍♂️🔥

Day 1 | March 6 | Key West, FL | 88 Miles Down!

🚴‍♂️ And He’s Off! Mike’s Miles 2025 Has Begun! 🚴‍♂️

Mike officially hit the road this morning, leaving Key West, Florida, and starting his 1,000-mile journey north! With the sun rising over the water, he set off, fully loaded with all his gear and ready for the challenge ahead. He has safely arrived at his first checkpoint, Islamorada!

Stay tuned for more updates as Mike continues his trek up the coast! Want to support Mike’s journey? He’s riding to help fund a service dog for a veteran in need. Every donation makes a difference!

Day 0 | March 5 | Key West, FL | 0 Miles Completed

Mike has arrived in Key West, Florida! 🌴☀️ Tomorrow, he officially kicks off his 1,000-mile ride to South Carolina, raising awareness and funds to support service dogs for veterans.

This ride is a big step—Mike’s first fully unsupported journey! Without a support vehicle, he’ll be carrying all his gear on his bike, making this an exciting challenge in both endurance and planning. He won’t be completely alone, as he’s starting out with two other cyclists, but each rider is taking on their own adventure.

For now, it’s all about final preparations—getting the bike ready, packing up, and enjoying a little bit of Key West before the miles begin. Tomorrow, the ride starts with an 85-mile stretch to Islamorada, FL.

If you’d like to support Mike on this journey, the best way to do so is by donating to the cause he’s riding for—helping provide service dogs to veterans in need. Stay tuned for updates as he pedals forward for a great cause!
